The connection between electricity, magnetism and motion was first discovered in 1820 by French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775-1867), which is the basic science behind electric motors. However, if we want to turn this amazing scientific discovery into more practical technology to power our electric lawn mowers and toothbrushes, we must develop it further. The inventors who did this were the British Michael Faraday (1791-1867) and William Sturgeon (1783-1850) and the American Joseph Henry (7977-1878) year). The electric motor is how they realized their outstanding invention. Do you know what an electric motor is? Let us continue reading.

This passage is going to talk about the followings of electric motor:

(1)Introduction to electric motor

(2)The working principle of electric motor

(3)Advantages and disadvantages of electric motor

(1)Introduction to electric motor

Electric motor is a widely used electric tool.

An electric motor is a device used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, as opposed to a generator. They operate using electromagnetic principles, which state that force is applied when there is an electric current in a magnetic field. This force generates torque on the wire loops present in the magnetic field, which causes the motor to rotate and perform useful work. Electric motors have a wide range of uses, such as fans, power tools, electrical appliances, electric cars and hybrid cars.

(2)The working principle of electric motor

How do electric motors work?

Electric motors have many different working parts so that they continuously rotate and provide power as needed. Electric motors may operate under direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC), both of which have their advantages and disadvantages.

The main components of DC motors include:

Stator: The stationary part of the motor, especially the magnet. Electromagnets are usually used to provide more power.

Rotor: A coil mounted on the axle and rotating at high speed to provide rotating mechanical energy for the system.

Commutator: This component is the key to DC motors. Without it, the rotor will not be able to continuously rotate due to the reaction force generated by the constantly changing current. Whenever the coil rotates half a turn, the commutator reverses the current, which causes the rotor to rotate.

Power supply: Provide electromotive force to make current flow in the system.

Brushes: These brushes are connected to the terminals of the power source to allow electrical energy to flow into the commutator.

(3)The wide usage of electric motors

As a typical induction motor, electric motors are widely used.

Electric motors have many uses, ranging from heavy industries to small toys. Different types of electric motors will be selected in different environments. Here are some examples: Wind-making equipment, such as electric fans, electric toy cars, boats, etc. Lifts, elevators, electric vehicles, such as subways, tram factories, and hypermarkets. It is also used in electric automatic doors and electric rolling shutters on buses.

Not only that, optical drives, printers, washing machines, water pumps, disk drives, electric razors, tape recorders, video recorders, CD players, and other industries often see electric motors.

Fast elevators, machine tools (such as machine tools), textile machines, and mixers also need electric motors to drive.

Get instant power at the touch of a switch-our ancestors will love electric motors! You can find them in everything from electric trains to remote-controlled cars, and you might be surprised by their universality. How many motors are there in your room now? You may have two in your computer for beginners, one for spinning hard drives, and the other for powering cooling fans. If you sit in the bedroom, you will find motors in hair dryers and many toys; in the bathroom, they are in exhaust fans and electric shavers. In the kitchen, almost all appliances from washing machines, dishwashers to coffee grinders, microwave ovens and electric can openers are equipped with electric motors.
